The Blackworm Virus Hoax

The Blackworm Virus is indeed a serious virus. It can disable anti-virus products, overwrite user files and email itself out to just about every email address found on the infected computer. However, one thing the Blackworm Virus does not do is announce itself to the infected user. So, if your PC is telling you that you are infected with Blackworm Virus, please be highly suspicious of that.

Recently, many users are experiencing pop up messages that their computer is infected with Blackworm Virus. The problem is that these messages are not generated by respectable anti-virus products, rather by a hidden trojan file! As it turns out, the user's computer is infected with a trojan (either Vundo or Smitfraud Trojan) that tries to scare the user into thinking that their computer is infected with the dangerous Blackworm Virus. The intention is to trick the user into purchasing a rogue anti-spyware product that is supposed to clean out the Blackworm Virus. The trojan makers and the rogue anti-spyware makers are actually one and the same! They find a way to infect the user's computer, start issuing the warning messages, then propose their fake anti-spyware products to remove the alleged Blackworm Virus infection.

Once the user buys one of these products, the trojan makers have made their money. With 100,000's of infected computers (not by Blackworm but by the trojans peddling these fake removers), these bandits stand to make a sizeable income. But they do not stop there. A short while passes and the trojan (still active on the infected computer) starts generating other warning messages claiming other infections, proposing other rogue remover products. Recent infected PC's showed warning messages claiming Beagle Virus infections.

Symptoms of Blackworm Trojan Infection

Computers infected with Vundo or Smitfraud Trojan display warning messages claiming that the computer is infected with Blackworm Virus and then recommend installation of one of a rogue anti-spyware product. If the user ignores the messages, the trojan actually installs the product without user's consent. The products that these trojans ultimately would like users to buy are:

  • AntiVirusGold
  • Crystalys Media
  • P.S.Guard
  • PSGuard
  • Search Maid
  • Security IGuard
  • Security Toolbar
  • SpyAxe

  • SpywareQuake

Also, user's homepage and / or Desktop can be changed to one of many fake security websites such as amaena.com.
